Garmin FAQ: Straps & QuickFit / Quick Release compatibility | Clipz-it

Garmin FAQ | Clipz-it
Garmin straps: all your questions answered

QuickFit, Quick Release, 20/22/26 mm widths, compatibility by model: direct answers on Garmin replacement straps.

Direct answer Garmin uses two systems: QuickFit (tool-free proprietary clip, 20/22/26 mm depending on the model) and Quick Release (standard spring bar compatible with third-party straps 20/22 mm). Check your model in our guide table.
Attachment systems
What is the difference between QuickFit and Quick Release on Garmin?
QuickFit is the proprietary Garmin system: a side clip lets you change the strap without tools in 1 second. It comes in 20, 22 and 26 mm depending on the range.

Quick Release is a standard spring bar system used on slimmer Garmin watches (Venu, Vivoactive, etc.): it accepts most third-party straps in 18, 20 or 22 mm. See our QuickFit vs Quick Release guide.
Are Garmin QuickFit straps interchangeable between models?
Yes, QuickFit straps are interchangeable across all Garmin watches that use the same width (20, 22 or 26 mm). A 22 mm QuickFit strap designed for a Fenix 7 (47 mm) fits a Fenix 8 47 mm, an Epix Gen 2 or a Forerunner 965: same width, same connector. Note that the Fenix 7S (42 mm) and Epix Pro 42 mm use QuickFit 20 mm, not 22.
Compatibility by model
Which strap width for my Garmin Fenix 7?
The Fenix 7 comes in three sizes:
• Fenix 7 (47 mm) → QuickFit 22 mm
• Fenix 7S (42 mm) → QuickFit 20 mm
• Fenix 7X (51 mm) → QuickFit 26 mm
Check our Fenix 7 strap guide for a complete selection.
Does my Garmin Forerunner 255 accept third-party straps?
Yes. The Forerunner 255 (47 mm) uses Quick Release 22 mm straps, and the Forerunner 255S (41 mm) uses 18 mm. Standard third-party straps in 22 mm or 18 mm are directly compatible. See our Forerunner 255 selection.
What width for the Garmin Venu 3?
The Garmin Venu 3 (45 mm) uses Quick Release 22 mm straps. The Venu 3S (41 mm) uses 18 mm. Third-party straps with matching dimensions are compatible without adapters.
Do Garmin Instinct watches accept third-party straps?
The Garmin Instinct 2 (45 mm) comes with a Quick Release 22 mm spring bar and accepts standard 22 mm third-party straps. Its Garmin manual states that it also accepts QuickFit 22 straps by replacing the spring bar. The Instinct 3 45 mm works the same way. Note: the Instinct uses a specific bezel design, so check that the strap covers the side lugs properly if you want a clean finish.
Materials & usage
Which Garmin strap for trail running and extreme outdoor activities?
For extreme conditions (rain, mud, heat, altitude), choose high-density nylon or reinforced silicone. These materials resist UV rays and moisture, and do not retain bacteria. Our Top 5 outdoor 2026 compares the best options.
Do I need a tool to change a Garmin QuickFit strap?
No. The QuickFit system is designed for tool-free changes: press the release lever on the side of the strap, slide it out of the case, and click the new one into place. Total time: under 5 seconds per strap.
Practical questions
What is the difference between a Garmin 20 mm and 22 mm strap?
The width (20 or 22 mm) corresponds to the space between the case lugs, and the two sizes are not interchangeable. A 22 mm strap will not snap into a 20 mm slot: the 2 mm difference physically blocks insertion. 20 mm equips compact models (Forerunner 255S, Venu 3S, Fenix 7S); 22 mm equips standard cases (Forerunner 255, Venu 3, Fenix 7 47 mm). 26 mm is reserved for XL cases (Fenix 7X, Epix Pro 51 mm).
Can you machine wash a Garmin strap?
Yes for silicone and nylon straps: delicate cycle at 30°C without spin. Remove the strap from the case before washing to prevent water infiltration into the QuickFit or Quick Release mechanism. Dry flat, never tumble dry. Leather or premium fabric straps should be cleaned by hand with a slightly damp cloth.
How long does a Garmin strap last?
In intensive outdoor use, a Garmin silicone strap lasts an average of 18 to 30 months before showing signs of cracking at flex points. High-density nylon lasts longer (2 to 4 years) thanks to its tight weave density. The QuickFit mechanism itself is designed for over 5,000 open/close cycles and will not wear out before the strap.
