A poorly machined pin can jam the release mechanism or, the other way round, work loose under pull and drop the watch without warning. In practice, the real risk zone sits below €10-12; above that, most third-party makers stay within Apple's mechanical tolerances.

Why they cost so much (and what you're really paying for)
An official Apple Watch strap isn't a technology product. There's no electronic component, no chip, no sensor. It's a strap: moulded silicone, woven nylon or machined metal. The attachment system (the connector that slides into the case) is the same on Apple's straps and on third-party makers' straps. The mechanism has been standard since the first Apple Watch in 2015.
What you pay for at €49 or €99 is mainly the brand, the packaging and Apple's margin. Material quality? Serious third-party makers use the same grades of silicone, the same high-density nylon, the same grade 5 titanium. The difference comes down to the logo and the box.
That doesn't mean every cheap strap is equal. Straps at €5 on marketplaces use low-end silicone that yellows, buckles that rust and connectors that rattle in the case. A middle ground exists: straps between €15 and €75 that offer equivalent, sometimes better, quality than Apple's models, without the brand premium.

Can a €17 strap really compete with a €49 Apple strap?

Do Apple Watch sensors work with a third-party strap?
Yes, perfectly. The strap plays no part in how the sensors work (heart rate, SpO2, temperature). What matters is that the watch sits flat against the skin, fitted neither too tight nor too loose. A well-fitted third-party strap gives exactly the same readings as an Apple strap.
Why doesn't Apple sell leather straps any more?
Apple removed all its leather straps from its store at the end of 2022, probably for environmental reasons (its carbon neutrality goal).
