QuickFit or Quick-Release: which system does your Garmin use?
Direct answerQuickFit is Garmin’s proprietary system (side clip, tool-free, widths 20/22/26 mm depending on model). Quick Release is a standard spring-bar system compatible with most third-party straps in 20 or 22 mm.

    The essentials in brief

    • Garmin uses two systems: QuickFit (proprietary clip) and Quick-Release (standard spring bar).
    • QuickFit is fitted to outdoor watches (Fenix, Epix, MARQ, Tactix, Enduro) in 20, 22 or 26 mm depending on case size.
    • Quick-Release is fitted to Forerunner, Venu, Vivoactive and Instinct E models, in 18, 20 or 22 mm.
    • The two are not interchangeable, even at the same width.

Changing the strap on a Garmin watch should be simple. Yet one question keeps coming up: which attachment system does my watch use? The answer decides everything, because a strap made for one system will not fit the other, even when the stated width is the same. Get the system wrong and the strap goes straight back in its packaging.

Garmin uses two quite distinct mechanisms. This guide shows you how to tell them apart in seconds, which width to choose, and why a QuickFit 22 mm is not a Quick-Release 22 mm. By the end, you will know exactly which collection to go to, so you never order the wrong one.

    Two systems, two worlds

    Expert answer

QuickFit and Quick Release are often confused but technically incompatible. QuickFit is a proprietary Garmin system: the clips engage in grooves cut into the lugs of Fenix, Instinct and other outdoor watches. Quick Release is a universal standard using fine spring bars, common to most classic watches. Both can be changed without tools, but the mechanisms are not interchangeable.

    Marc Lefèvre: connected accessories specialist

The first system is called QuickFit. It is a proprietary clip designed by Garmin: the strap locks in with a quarter turn, with no visible bar. It is found on outdoor and premium watches, designed to let you change strap on the go during expeditions.

The second is called Quick-Release. It is the classic spring bar used in watchmaking, with a small tab you press in with a fingernail. Garmin uses it on its running and lifestyle watches, which are slimmer and lighter. It is a standard, but be aware that width varies by model.

Why two systems? QuickFit meets a field need: changing the strap mid-expedition, with gloves on, without losing any parts. Quick-Release keeps the slimness and light weight expected of a running or everyday watch. Each system therefore serves a specific use and sits alongside the other in the range without overlap.

QuickFit, the clip for outdoor watches

QuickFit is fitted to Fenix, Epix, MARQ, Tactix, Quatix, Enduro, Descent and almost all Instinct models (except Instinct E 40 mm), as well as some Approach models. The strap clips on without tools: you lift a small latch, position the strap, then press it down. Thirty seconds, clean hands, no bar to handle and no risk of scratching the lugs.

Width depends on case size. As a general rule, a compact case takes 20 mm, a standard case 22 mm, and a large case 26 mm. A Fenix 7S takes 20 mm, a Fenix 7 takes 22 mm, a Fenix 7X takes 26 mm. This pattern holds across the QuickFit range, which makes choosing simpler once you know your size.

    Quick-Release, the standard spring bar

Quick-Release is fitted to Forerunner, Venu, Vivoactive, the Instinct E 40 mm and the Approach S12, S40 and S42. The mechanism is that of a classic watch: a spring bar with a tab you pull to release the strap. One advantage is that it opens the door to a much wider range of straps.

Again, width varies by model. Smaller cases go down to 18 mm, mid-size models take 20 mm, larger ones 22 mm. A Forerunner 255S is 18 mm, a Forerunner 55 is 20 mm, a Forerunner 255 is 22 mm. Checking the exact width avoids the most common mistake when ordering.

    Identify yours in 10 seconds

Turn your watch over and look at the join between case and strap. Two clues are unmistakable.

    • You see a thin metal bar with a small tab on the side of the strap: that is Quick-Release.
    • You see no bar, only a small latch on the strap that clips into the case: that is QuickFit.

If you are still unsure, remove the original strap and look at its inner face. A QuickFit strap has a wide plastic piece with a built-in latch, while a Quick-Release strap shows two metal bars at its ends. The difference is then obvious.

    The trap to avoid

A QuickFit 22 mm and a Quick-Release 22 mm have the same width but different mechanisms. They are not interchangeable. Always check the system before the width.

    Special cases to note

The Instinct range illustrates this nuance. The Instinct family is almost entirely QuickFit. The Instinct, Instinct 2, 2S, Crossover, Instinct 3 (45 mm) use 22 mm QuickFit (20 mm for the 2S), while the larger Instinct 2X and Instinct 3 50 mm cases use 26 mm QuickFit. Only the Instinct E 40 mm uses 20 mm Quick-Release. One family name, multiple widths, but almost always QuickFit.

Similarly, Quatix and Tactix are available in 22 mm or 26 mm depending on the version, always using QuickFit. The Approach range is also split between the two systems: the S12, S40, and S42 use Quick-Release, while the S60, S62, and S70 use QuickFit. If in doubt, the factory-fitted strap remains the most reliable reference.

Switching between systems: is it possible?

Technically yes, but with caution. Adapters exist to convert a QuickFit attachment into a standard spring bar, allowing you to fit a Quick-Release or universal strap. This is useful for reusing a strap you like, but it adds a component between the watch and the strap, resulting in a slightly thicker profile.

For intense sports use, it is better to stick to the original system, which is more reliable over time and lower profile on the wrist. Adapters remain a temporary solution, to be reserved for straps that are unavailable in the correct format. In most cases, choosing the correct system directly remains the optimal choice.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between QuickFit and Quick-Release?

QuickFit is a proprietary Garmin clip that locks without a spring bar, used on outdoor watches like the Fenix. Quick-Release is a standard spring bar used on the Forerunner, Venu, and Vivoactive. The two are not interchangeable.

    Does a 22 mm QuickFit strap fit a 22 mm Quick-Release watch?

No. Even if the width is identical, the mechanism is different. A QuickFit strap cannot be mounted on a Quick-Release attachment, and vice versa.

How do I find the width of my Garmin strap?

The width depends on the case size and is sometimes engraved on the back of the watch. Generally, smaller cases take 18 mm or 20 mm, standard cases take 22 mm, and larger cases take 26 mm.

    Which Garmin watches use QuickFit?

The Fenix, Epix, MARQ, Tactix, Quatix, Enduro, Descent, and almost all Instinct models (except Instinct E 40 mm), as well as certain high-end Approach models.

Which system does my Forerunner use?

All Forerunner models use Quick-Release. Only the width varies: 18 mm for S models, 20 mm for the 55, 165, and 245, and 22 mm for the 255, 265, 955, and 965.
