Changing your Apple Watch strap becomes straightforward once you know the movement. The first time, though, you may hesitate to press firmly, search for the button or feel unsure. This guide takes you through each step, with mistakes to avoid and tips for all Apple Watch models from Series 3 to Series 11, SE and Ultra.
Expert answer
The Apple Watch strap release mechanism varies between generations. On Series 4 and later, the buttons are flat and centred: compatible with standard third-party straps. On Series 3 and earlier, the buttons are slightly recessed and some wide adapters can get stuck. Always check compatibility by generation, not just case size.

Our recommendation
For your watch, we recommend Wave, Milan, Loop, Havane and Alvéole first. Each strap below has been checked for compatibility with your watch: check the model and case size (in mm) before ordering.

The basics: the Apple Watch attachment system
Since 2015, Apple has used a proprietary attachment system on all its watches. Two side connectors slide into a channel on the back of the case. A release button, also on the back, releases the strap when pressed.
There is no spring bar. Follow the procedure to avoid scratching the watch.
Compatibility by size:
- Series 3: 38/42 mm straps
- Series 4, 5, 6, SE, SE 2, SE 3: 40/44 mm straps
- Series 7, 8, 9: 41/45 mm straps
- Series 10, 11: 42/46 mm straps
- Ultra, Ultra 2, Ultra 3: 49 mm straps
How to remove an Apple Watch strap: 3 steps
To remove an Apple Watch strap, place the watch face down, press the release button on the back of the case, then slide the strap sideways. Repeat on the other side.
Step 1 - Place the watch face down On a clean, soft surface (a cloth or cushion). The back of the case is now visible.
Step 2 - Locate the release button Look at the back of the case. You will see two small rectangular buttons at the top and bottom, beside the channels holding the straps. These are the release buttons.
Step 3 - Press and slide Press the top button firmly, then slide the strap sideways to remove it. Repeat for the lower half of the strap.
Total time: depends on how familiar you are with the movement.
How to fit an Apple Watch strap: 3 steps
To fit an Apple Watch strap, slide each half sideways into the channel on the back of the watch until it clicks, then pull gently to check that it stays in place.
Step 1 - Identify the two halves of the strap An Apple Watch strap has two halves: one with the buckle (usually the lower half) and one with the holes or magnet (usually the upper half).
Step 2 - Insert the first half Slide the lower half of the strap sideways into the channel on the back of the watch. You should hear a distinct click indicating that the strap is engaged.
Step 3 - Insert the second half Repeat at the top with the second half. Listen for the click again.
Check: pull gently on the strap. If both halves stay firmly in place, you are ready. Otherwise, press firmly again until it clicks.
Model-specific details
Apple Watch Series 3 (38/42 mm): the same procedure as the other models. Do not confuse it with Series 4-6 (40/44 mm), as the channel is slightly different.
Apple Watch SE / SE 2 / SE 3: the same as Series 4/5/6. 40/44 mm channel.
Apple Watch Ultra / Ultra 2 / Ultra 3: 49 mm titanium case with a reinforced system. The click is more pronounced and the original Alpine strap releases with a slightly different mechanism - the principle remains the same.
Solo Loop strap (one-piece silicone): no clasp or conventional connector - you simply slip the Loop over your wrist. The attachment to the case is the same as on standard Sport Bands.
Common mistakes to avoid
Mistake #1 - Forcing the strap without pressing the release button If you pull without pressing the button, you risk damaging the attachment mechanism. Always press first.
Mistake #2 - Inserting it the wrong way round The rear channel has a specific orientation: the strap connectors must face the correct way. If the strap resists, do not force it. Turn it over and try again.
Mistake #3 - Not hearing the click The click indicates that the strap is attached. Without a clear click, the strap may release accidentally. Press again and slide until it clicks.
Mistake #4 - Mixing sizes A 41 mm strap will not fit into a 42 mm channel without force. Always check size compatibility before trying.
Mistake #5 - Touching the heart rate sensors on the back Avoid touching the heart rate sensors (the green discs on the back) with greasy fingers. They work better when clean.
Which way round to fit an Apple Watch strap: Sport Band, Sport Loop, Solo Loop
To work out which way round to fit an Apple Watch strap: the half with the holes or plastic anchor goes at the top, on the screen side, and the half with the buckle or hook-and-loop fastening goes at the bottom. Details for each strap type follow below.
This question comes up often. Here is how it works:
Sport Band (silicone with buckle) - the half WITH the holes goes at the top (on the screen side). The half WITH the metal buckle goes at the bottom. The buckle faces the same way as on a traditional watch.
Sport Loop (nylon with hook-and-loop fastening) - the half WITH the plastic anchor (short) goes at the top. The half WITH the hook-and-loop fastening (long) goes at the bottom and wraps around your wrist.
Solo Loop (one-piece silicone) - no specific orientation; you slip it over your wrist.
milanese mesh / Magnetic strap - place the half WITH the magnet wherever you prefer; the clasp closes around your wrist.
leather with a traditional buckle - the same orientation as on a traditional watch: buckle at the bottom, holes at the top.
